Abstract
This chapter provides an overview of wood’s physical and mechanical properties, which are essential for understanding its behaviour under various conditions. The mechanical properties, particularly in the linear elastic range, are characterised by reversible deformations following unloading. Key factors influencing these properties include the type of load, loading speed, and duration of the applied load. Additionally, the chapter addresses the ageing process of wood and wood-based materials, noting that in dry climates, wood properties remain largely unchanged. However, depending on the species, wood may undergo colour changes, such as darkening or lightening. These factors are crucial for assessing the performance and aesthetics of wood in different environments and applications. Understanding the interplay between these properties and external conditions is essential for optimising the use of wood in construction.
