Abstract
The structural composition primarily determines the properties of wood and wood-based materials. This applies to all structural levels, from the macrostructure to the cell-wall structure. Bulk density, the fibre-to-load angle and growth-ring orientation are critical structural factors influencing the wood properties, as well as the moisture content and temperature. Overall, the properties of sawn timber vary greatly, which is why machine grading is often applied to determine the strength. In contrast, the properties of wood-based materials vary to a considerably lesser extent, as the structural composition is controlled during production.
