Abstract

In the Timber Tectonics in the Digital Age course, University of Oregon Architecture students partner with Oregon State University students from fields such as Wood Science and Engineering, Architectural Technology, Civil Engineering and Construction Management. It is taught by two instructors leading live online sessions to students in two locations, with limited face-to-face meetings. Working in remote interdisciplinary teams, students study how technology is shaping materials, design and construction. Students learn how material properties, structural forces and fabrication practices influence architectural form and connection design of timber structures. They explore form using physical and digital models with guidance in parametric modeling and conceptual structural design. This empowers them to fluidly create and evaluate design variations, uniting structural considerations and visual aesthetics.
