Abstract

Description This extended critical review and technical note examines the definitions, measurement methods, biological variability, and physical interpretation of wood density, specific gravity, and wood cell-wall substance density. Particular attention is given to the distinction between bulk wood density and the operationally measured density of cell-wall material. The study addresses six interconnected questions: (1) the magnitude and distribution of wood-density variation among tree species; (2) the predictive information gained by distinguishing hardwoods from softwoods; (3) variability in cell-wall substance density associated with chemical composition, crystallinity, and molecular packing; (4) differences among liquid-displacement, gas-pycnometry, and microscopic measurements, including their implications for microvoids and dynamic free volume; (5) the conditional estimation of porosity and maximum moisture content from density measurements; and (6) the limitations of using density to predict mechanical properties, dimensional changes, and heat–moisture transport. A curated global wood-density dataset comprising 6,484 valid records is examined through descriptive statistics, violin plots, source comparisons, and prediction-error analysis. The review distinguishes directly measured basic density from values converted from other moisture and volume reference states. Findings are discussed alongside historical and recent studies, including the Global Wood Density Database and its updated 2026 version. Special emphasis is placed on the classical investigations of Stamm, the differences between helium- and water-displacement measurements, the interpretation of cell-wall microvoids and molecular free volume, and their relationships with moisture sorption and swelling. The accompanying Jupyter Notebook integrates theoretical discussion, literature comparisons, numerical examples, tables, and computational visualizations. Experimental observations, literature-derived values, model assumptions, and independent calculations are distinguished wherever possible. Language: Korean, with English scientific terminology and bibliographic references. Scope and limitations: This is an independently prepared, AI-assisted technical synthesis rather than a peer-reviewed experimental study. The compiled dataset is not a statistically representative sample of all global forests. Some source-level measurement definitions and bibliographic details remain subject to further verification. Numerical illustrations and literature-based replots must not be interpreted as newly performed physical experiments. Version: Korean v21.3, October 18, 2026.
