Abstract
This paper focuses on evaluating the mechanical performance of connections between decks and timber beams with self-drilling tapping screws and wood screws through shear and withdrawal tests. The shear performance of self-drilling screws may be slightly lower than that of wood screws. Self-drilling tapping screws had lower withdrawal parameter than wood screws. For self-drilling screws, the design formula for wood screws appears applicable if the embedded strength of the timber is adjusted according to the loading direction. The withdrawal strength formulas for wood screws in both the Japanese timber design standard and Eurocode are considered applicable to self-drilling screws.
