Abstract

The study investigated the effects of modification treatments on the bending properties of teakwood ( Tectona grandis ) and rubberwood ( Hevea brasiliensis ). The modification process consisted of three treatment factors: furfuryl alcohol impregnation (treated and untreated), heat treatment (180°C, 260°C, and untreated), and hot pressing (compression ratios of 1.5, 2.0, and untreated). The main objective was to improve the mechanical performance of these two important tropical hardwoods by improving their strength and dimensional stability through a combination of chemical and thermal modifications. The results showed that the compression ratio treatment had a significant effect on the modulus of rupture (MOR) of both wood species, while furfuryl alcohol and heat treatments acted as secondary factors influencing the bending strength. In contrast, the modulus of elasticity (MOE) was primarily affected by the compression ratio, which also interacted with furfuryl alcohol impregnation and heat treatment to influence the elasticity of both woods. Overall, the treatment combination effectively improves the bending performance of teakwood and rubberwood, suggesting that this approach can improve the structural applicability and durability of tropical timbers for advanced material use.
