Abstract

The design of timber structures necessitates a comprehensive understanding of timber and wood-based materials, not only as modern and sustainable construction resources but also as integral components of load-bearing systems. This includes knowledge of structural elements composed entirely of timber as well as hybrid connections involving timber and other building materials. While structural design and dimensioning are guided by established standards and design rules, reliance on these alone does not guarantee successful or cost-effective outcomes. This chapter explores the interplay between material characteristics, design principles, and the limitations of normative guidelines, highlighting the critical need for informed engineering judgement and innovation in the realisation of efficient and sustainable timber constructions. This chapter presents an overview of the most relevant parameters for the structural design of timber buildings at normal temperatures and in the fire case. The purpose is to provide sufficient information for designers, architects, and engineers and introduce them to the design of timber buildings.
