Abstract
This chapter is intended to introduce the reader to the origins of lumber, the tree species commonly used to produce construction and finish lumber, as well as how these are graded and why grading is important. The chapter has five sections relating to the North American market: softwood lumber species that are most often used for framing lumber and boards; hardwood lumber species that are commonly used for appearance work such as displays, mouldings, flooring, and furniture; softwood lumber grading data and hardwood lumber grading data. The final section identifies some of the differences in species grouping, lumber grading, and sizing in the European market. This combination of information provides the reader with a jumping off point for specifying wood products for projects.
