Abstract

The preservation and reliable condition assessment of timber engineering structures necessitate effective non-destructive testing (NDT) methods. Prior laboratory studies have demonstrated that Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) is fundamentally capable of detecting defects such as metallic connectors and moisture zones in timber components. However, the method’s effectiveness is highly dependent on material properties, measurement setups, and external interferences, while manual evaluation remains time-intensive and experience-dependent. The objective of this study is to enhance microwave-based methods for NDT of timber structures and evaluate its potential for qualitative anomaly detection under laboratory and field conditions. Initially, existing research and preliminary findings are reviewed to identify strengths and limitations of the methodologies. Microwave measurements will be conducted and analyzed to assess the detectability of typical damage patterns, including moisture zones, biological degradation, and metallic connectors. Finally, the outcomes will be discussed regarding GPR’s potential and constraints in timber structure diagnostics. Future perspectives for methodological advancements, particularly involving automated processes and intelligent algorithms, will be outlined to guide further developments in NDT for civil engineering.
