Abstract

The paper presents the results of numerical analyses concerning the behavior of bent laminated veneer lumber (LVL) beams with nominal dimensions of 45×160×3300 mm 3 reinforced with vertically near surface mounted (NSM) flat steel bars. The aim of the study was to determine the influence of reinforcement on the basic parameters of bent beams, such as load‐bearing capacity and stiffness. The variables in the analysis were the type of reinforcement material (S235 or S355), its dimensions (25×4 or 40×4 mm 2 ), and the manner of its redistribution in the cross‐section. These variables were obtained, among other things, by changing the number of flat bars between the tension and compression zones of the beam. The reinforcement ratio of the cross‐section ranged from 1.39% to 5.55%. The increase in load‐bearing capacity ranged from 30% to a maximum of around 100%, while the bending stiffness was improved up to 160% when compared with unreinforced LVL beams. The transition from a steel grade designated as S235 to S355 resulted in 5% gain in maximum loading force. The optimal configuration of reinforcement included their equal distribution in the tension and compression zone. The new steel‐veneer composite may expand the area of application of engineering wood products.
