Abstract
The component method, well established in steel construction, is a flexible and easy‐to‐use design concept enabling safe, economical, and resource‐efficient structures by accounting for both load‐bearing capacity and rotational joint stiffness. In timber engineering, however, the method has so far been applied in only a few studies and remains in an early stage of development. In particular, a timber component catalogue containing the necessary details to determine the properties of the relevant basic components is lacking. This gap also hampers the efficient design of hybrid steel‐timber structures, for which systematic design rules are not yet available. This paper presents an excerpt from the first draft of a component catalogue for timber and hybrid steel‐timber joints, based on an extensive literature review. Its applicability is demonstrated using a benchmarking case study of a moment‐resisting frame corner joint connecting a steel column and a timber beam. The procedure of the component method is outlined, a corresponding spring model is developed, and the analytically derived moment‐rotation curve is validated against experimental results. The study highlights the potential of the component method to provide reliable and economical design solutions for hybrid structures.
