Abstract

Fused deposition modeling (FDM) is a widely utilized additive manufacturing method effectively employed in diverse sectors like aerospace, automotive, and architecture to create thermoplastic components. However, there is a vital need to improve the mechanical characteristics and reduce the weight of FDM components because to the inherent restrictions in mechanical attributes and material mass. To address this concern, this study presents an investigation involving the utilization of fused deposition modeling to create experimental samples composed of wood-based polylactic acid (PLA) and laminated carbon fiber (CF)/PLA. The focal point of the research involves an experimental analysis of the mechanical properties and microstructure of these functionally graded material, specifically concentrating on the wood PLA and CF/PLA layered specimens. The experimental findings indicate that the hybrid specimen exhibits reduced mass compared to the CF/PLA specimen, while also demonstrating improved tensile, compression, and flexural mechanical characteristics in contrast to the wood PLA specimen.
