Abstract

Structural Health Monitoring of timber structures represents a challenging task in the field of structural engineering. With respect to other materials, timber is particularly affected by degradation phenomena, due to environmental thermal-hygrometric variations, insect and biological attacks or durability issues. Consequently, a decay of the material properties and connections are expected, modifying the structural response. In this field, the monitoring through satellite interferometry data can represents an interesting emerging technology in the field of timber structures because of its potentialities related to monitor long-term displacements, thus following the time degradation of the structures. This paper presents an overview on the potentialities offered by the interferometric monitoring applied to long-span roof timber structures having simple or double curvature, interested by displacement causes due to environmental and/or long-term actions. Nevertheless, the curvature of these structures, together with the main orientation of the structure with respect to the satellite travelling orbits, make available measures extrapolated associated with a single dataset (ascending or descending) distributed on different surfaces of the structure separately. Therefore, spatial resampling issues arise in the displacement measures, making the measured displacements related to environmental and long-term factors affected by uncertainties. These issues are discussed with reference to some selected case of curved timber roofs characterized by long-spans, subjected to displacement causes related to environmental and long-term effects.
