Abstract

Due to the increase in the sustainable construction of cross-laminated timber (CLT) buildings and considering that CLT structural floors have a flexible behavior due to their mass and rigidity characteristics, the study of service limit states is necessary. This paper presents a study of the vibratory serviceability of CLT mezzanines using numerical and experimental methods, and also the comparison of these results with current regulations. Two types of three-layer and five-layer CLT panels have been manufactured in the laboratory, using inexpensive pine boards and a synthetic resin intended for interior structural laminated woods as an adhesive. Parametric studies were also carried out in each type of CLT panel considering the length as a variable. The dynamic characteristics have been obtained through environmental vibration tests, using triaxial accelerometers and data recorder. The numerical results have been obtained using the finite element method and, in particular, employing a very efficient hierarchical finite element model previously developed by the authors. The numerical and experimental results showed an adequate correlation. From verification of serviceability limit states, it is concluded that unit point load deflection is the decisive factor for the design and only 95 mm thick panels with lengths less than or equal to 3.4 m verify all vibrational serviceability conditions. In addition, it has been observed that the approximate equations proposed by the current regulations overestimate the calculation of deflection in this type of structural systems.
