Abstract

An approach is presented for computing the temperature-time parameters of autoclave steaming regimes of sawn timber, which ensure good homogeneity of coloring throughout the entire volume of the steamed timber. With the help of own non-stationary model and a new temperature-time quantitative indicator of the homogeneity of desired wood coloration, the parameters of all four stages of steaming regime of beech sawn timber with thickness of 80 mm, initial temperature of 0, 10, and 20 oC, and moisture content of 0.4, 0.6, and 0.8 kg·kg−1 were determined at maximum operating temperature in the autoclave of 123 oC. This regime ensures the achievement of values from 2.1·106–2.2·106 K·s of the integral temperature-time areas Sw in all points of the volume of steamed timber with the specified characteristics, which corresponds to the achievement of a homogeneous dark brown color. The deviation between Sw on the surface and in the center of the steamed timber is within 4.5%, which makes it practically impossible to visually distinguish the coloring at different layers of timber. The approach can be applied to compute the temperature-time parameters of autoclave steaming regimes of frozen and non-frozen wood materials with different characteristics to any desired homogeneous coloring.
